Discover all four castles of Kastelendorp Baarlo and the beautiful Kasteel de Keverberg in Kessel. Along the way you can also stop at a historic botanical garden in the monastery village of Steijl!
Your route starts in the heart of Kastelendorp Baarlo. This characteristic village on the Maas and has 4 castles. You will encounter them all on your route. Starting with Kasteel De Berckt: a medieval castle that was rebuilt in 1838 in Italian style. Then you take the ferry to the monastery village of Steijl. Visit the Jochumhof, a botanical garden that is almost a century old. Beautifully situated on the Maas!
Further on you cross the Maas again with a ferry, to Kessel. You have a beautiful view of the city walls and Kasteel de Keverberg: since the renovation a few years ago, the most modern medieval castle in the Netherlands. From the glass hood you have a beautiful panorama over the Meuse valley.
You cycle straight through the woods back to Baarlo. Get off along the way to take a look at Château De Raay! Near the Maas you will pass Huis Oijen, built in Maasland Renaissance style with the striking'speklagen\\\': alternating layers of marl and brick. Kasteel d\\\'Erp, the last castle on your route, is beautifully situated in a park in the village of Baarlo. The first mention dates from 1388. A beautiful spot.
